Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above. (*) On 8/9/99, stopped stamping the barrels with the date code. The yellow 40 is most likely a rack number which is cool but doesn't really mean anything. The 'P' on the barrel is the firing proof and the HS means that the barrel was made by High Standards which is a combo that was used by Remington regularly. A serial number preceded by an 'S' indicates an M1911A1 manufact- ured by Singer (not many of these around - an understatement) 3. A serial number preceded by a 'NO' instead of a 'No' indicates manufacture by Remington-Rand.
